Aquatera warns Grande Prairie residents to check outdoor taps

Aquatera says it appears pranksters are at work in the Countryside North community. They have received five different reports from individuals who say the outside taps on their home have been turned on. Communications Specialist Lloyd Fischer says not only is this a waste of water but it could cause a lot of damage.

“Due to the changing temperatures water is freezing outside and is creating quite a lot of issues around the foundation of the home, on the siding and is of course pooling in the back yard.”

Aquatera recommends all customers check their taps just to ensure they are off. Fischer also says removing the handle from outdoor taps can prevent people from tampering with it.

“There are internal controls to turn off water to the outside [taps] so that can’t happen. If you do notice that someone has turned it on we do encourage you to contact authorities so they can take a look in to this. If there is any damage done to the water infrastructure system feel free to contact us.”

Fischer said while the majority of the reports are coming from the Country Side North everyone is encouraged to check their outdoor taps. Since posting their warning to social media comments have indicated this may be a more common occurrence than anyone realized.
