Update: Environment Canada has ended the warning for the northern Alberta area. Temperatures are expected to continue to hover around -20 for the next few days at least.
Environment Canada continued an extreme cold warning for some areas of the Peace region Tuesday. The initial warning came out on Christmas Day and included the city of Grande Prairie. It warned of an extended period of “very cold wind chills”. That warning has now ended for Grande Prairie but continues for much of central and northern Alberta and is expected to continue through most of the week.
Environments Canada says “this frigid weather pattern will remain entrenched.” They advise people to watch for cold related symptoms including shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.
Environment Canada also says if it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
