Edmonton terror suspect still awaiting psychiatric assessment

The man accused of attempted murder after this fall’s terror attack in Edmonton is still awaiting a psychiatric assessment. Global News reports the court learned Wednesday that due to a bed shortage at Alberta Hospital no doctor has had the chance to review Abdulahi Hasan Sharif’s case.

Last month a judge agreed that the 30 year-old’s mental health should be examined and two psychiatric assessments were ordered. One to determine if he was mentally fit to stand trial and another to determine his mental state at the time of the attack. He is expected to be admitted for assessment Thursday and is scheduled to be back in court January 12.

Sharif is charged after police say he rammed his car into a barricade near Commonwealth Stadium, stabbed an officer and proceeded to evade police while striking pedestrians as he approached the downtown core of the city. Eventually the truck he was driving was rammed by police and Sharif was taken in to custody.
