School bus driver praised for quick thinking in crash

UPDATE: Alberta RCMP have confirmed the driver of the second vehicle is also receiving treatment for injuries, although their updated condition is unknown. STARS Air Ambulance was dispatched to the area. An investigation into the crash continues.

A Peace River-area school bus driver is being hailed for their response to a crash Monday morning. The First Student bus hit another vehicle at the intersection Highway 2 and Roma Drive, just west of the town and northeast of Grimshaw.

Holy Family Catholic Regional Division says right after the collision, the driver kept the bus’ steering wheel straight, keeping the bus upright.

“Although this may seem like a small action, the usual automatic reaction is to swerve, which could have caused a roll over.”

Eleven students from HFCRD and Peace River School Division were on board at the time, but only minor injuries were sustained. Three children were taken to hospital for assessment and released later in the day, along with the driver.

“Thank you to the school bus driver for executing a skilled response to the emergency, to the emergency responders for their expert assistance, and to the families involved for their cooperation,” Holy Family adds.
