Races at Evergreen Park turning pink Sunday for breast cancer research

Evergreen Park will be going pink this Sunday for a brand new fundraiser.

Paint the Park Pink day will benefit breast cancer research, as part of this year’s horse racing schedule.

Jessica Sullivan, Revenue Development Coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society, says it’s the first time this Race for a Cure event has been held.

“There’s tons of things going on: horse races; we’re selling frisbees for five dollars for a trip for two anywhere WestJet flies in the world; we have pink drinks – some for the kids, some for the adults; bouncy castles. Lots of fun things going on out here.”

As it’s a new event, they haven’t set a goal for how much they’d like to see raised.

The day is sponsored by Brekkaas Vacuum & Tank, and Christine Brekkaas says it’s special to her to be involved in a unique event like this one.

“I’m a breast cancer survivor, so that’s why I always put my name behind the pink sponsorships. It’s just fun and exciting and different. It’s outside where people can enjoy the sun and enjoy the horses and their racing and it’s a family event.

Following the theme of everything pink, Evergreen Park Marketing and Sponsorship Manager Don Moon says they’re also holding a unique silent auction for pink jockey silks.

“We all have hockey jerseys and baseball jerseys and hats and pucks, but that’s one sporting item I don’t think very many for their collection is a race-worn jockey silks.”

Bids can be placed as early as Friday night as this weekend’s horse racing begins. There’s also a prize for the person or family who does the best job of dressing pink for the day, which starts at 1 p.m.

It all starts at 1 p.m. on August 10th, will everyone in attendance encouraged to wear pink.
