Western Alberta unemployment rate unchanged in October

The unemployment rate in western Alberta held steady at 5.8 per cent last month. That’s one per cent less than where it was in October 2016.

Statistics Canada says the Canadian economy added 35,300 jobs in October 2017, but the unemployment rate still increased as more young people looked for work. The number of full-time positions went up by 88,700, while part-time employment went down by 53,400 jobs, pushing the unemployment rate up to 6.3 per cent from 6.2 in September.

Alberta added 11,900 jobs last month, dropping the provincial unemployment rate from 7.9 to 7.8 per cent.
