Province invests in GPRC student mental health

The government of Alberta has made a huge investment in the mental health of GPRC students. $225,000 will be provided to the college every year for the next three years.

The money is specifically meant to fund mental health supports for staff and students. GPRC President Don Gnatiuk says the funds will go to a few different places.

“First of all it’s going to help support the peer counseling that is going on within the college. It’s going to help support with other people and resources in the system and it’s going to support an on staff psychologist.”

Gnatiuk says he would like to see that funding become permanent.

“This is a great start; we’re really pleased to be able to do this. But it’s an issue that’s growing in our environment. And as we mentioned to the minister, thank you thank you for your support, but this issue is growing.”

He believes the support of staff and students is a key part of their success.
