RCMP report spike in fake CRA calls

Grande prairie RCMP are warning about a significant increase in fraudulent calls. Police say the caller claims to be a representative of the Canada Revenue Agency.

The caller will usually ask for personal information like social insurance or credit card numbers. RCMP say the callers usually claim they are owed money and can be persistent and aggressive. Fake websites are also being created that resemble the CRA’s site. People are asked to enter their personal information online in what’s known as a “phishing scam”.

The CRA says they will never request personal information of any kind and would not leave any personal information in a voicemail. If you’ve lost money or have information your are urged to contact the RCMP.
