Young drivers now road ready

Good habits from a young age are the focus of the New and Young Driver Road Ready Program. The program covers a variety of topics, everything from impairment to farm equipment safety. Grande Prairie and Area Safe Communities Program Coordinator Cindy Blinston says they also use simulations as a way to teach the children.

“We want the kids to see how that affects driving ability in a negative way. Hopefully through these interactive activities that will be obvious to them. We didn’t want to do it in a preachy [way], we wanted it to be really hands on.”

Blinston says they also want the youth to understand alcohol is not the only way to be impaired.

“What we really want them to see is that there is an effect. So, we do have a station dedicated to drug impairment where we’re focusing on marijuana as our subject. So we are showing them that it does affect them cognitively. So it does have effects on road safety.”

“One of the things we also want is for there not to be a fear or aversion to being pulled over or dealing with enforcement officers. We want them to realize it can be a very positive experience. They’re there to help us and keep ourselves safe or our society safe.”

145 grade 10 students from Peace Wapiti Academy were the latest to spend a day completing the program.
