Enforcement Services focusing on taxi and pedestrian safety

Keeping pedestrians safe is the goal of this month’s Step program.

According to Alberta Transportation 40 per cent of vehicle collisions occur because the driver failed to yield the right of way. Expect to see enforcement officers monitoring high foot traffic locations like downtown, school zones and near parks.

Failing to yield to a pedestrian or passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk could mean a $776 fine and four demerit points. Drivers are reminded that pedestrians have the right of way in both marked and unmarked crosswalks.

Taxi’s form an important part of our transportation system, which is why this month’s Beep program will focus on their safety. Enforcement services will be ensuring all taxis and limos in town meet their standards during the month of October.

Sgt. Ryan Hoffman says inspections are performed twice a year to ensure the vehicles remain safe. If the public has concerns they are advised to note the taxi unit number and contact enforcement services.
