Candidate forums being held across the Peace country

Residents of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith, Fairview and the City and County of Grande Prairie have a chance to learn more about the people running to represent their communities over the next few days.

The Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce is hosting an all candidates forum for city council candidates Tuesday night. Those running will be meeting with the public starting at 5:30 p.m. with the forum following at 6:30 at the Bowes Family Gardens in Revolution Place.

Because there is a record number of candidates this year, only three will be chosen randomly to answer each question. They’ll also all have one chance to give a rebuttal to any question. Audience questions will be taken at the door to save time.

Wednesday night, the chamber is also hosting an open house for County candidates. From 6 to 9 p.m., all those running have been invited to Centre 2000 to meet with the public.

Also on Wednesday, the mayoral candidates in the Town of Beaverlodge will be sharing their platforms and responding to questions. Roger Loberg and Gary Rycroft will be at the St. Mary School gym from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for the debate put on by the Beaverlodge and District Chamber of Commerce. The other spots on council were filled by acclamation.

The Town of Fairview’s forum will also be Wednesday. Its Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 10 candidates for town council at Dunvegan Inn & Suites for a forum starting at 6:30 p.m. Mayor Gordon MacLeod was acclaimed.

Lastly on Thursday, the Sexsmith & District Chamber of Commerce is putting on a “meet the candidates” event at the Sexsmith Civic Centre. Mayor Claude Lagace was acclaimed, but there are 10 people vying for six spots on council. The night runs from 7 to 9 p.m.
