Chamber hosting open house for County council candidates

Instead of an all candidates forum, the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce is hosting an open house for those running in the municipal election in the County of Grande Prairie. Everyone on the ballot has been invited to Centre 2000 on Wednesday, October 4th.

In Division 2, incumbent Daryl Beeston is challenged by Don Streeper and Thomas Walter Tharp. In Division 3, incumbent Leanne Beaupre is up against Barry Yaehne. Incumbent Ross Sutherland will be racing against Maurissa Hietland and Bernie Smashnuk in Division 4.

Division 5’s candidates include incumbent Bob Marshall, Robert Hill, and Kevin Gingles. In Division 6, it’s incumbent Peter Harris, Ashley Heggelund and Kathleen Jean Longson. Division 9 will be see incumbent Corey Beck and Dwayne A. Badry face off.

There’s guaranteed to be at least one new councillor after October 16th. Incumbent Division 7 councillor Brock Smith isn’t in the running. Instead, Arthur Amendt and Linda Dianne Waddy are looking to fill his spot.

Division 1’s Harold Bulford and Division 8’s Karen Rosvold have both been acclaimed to their positions. Both are incumbents, and were elected in byelections in 2012 and 2016 respectively.

Next week’s open house will run from 6 to 9 p.m. It’s an opportunity for voters to meet and speak with the candidates. The elected councillors will choose a reeve and deputy reeve later this fall.
