County working on wildfire mitigation efforts

The county will be taking steps to ensure residents are protected from potential wildfires in the future.

Dead and dying trees will be removed along the Bear Creek Ravine due to the “high property risk” in the area.

Arlen Miller, Director of Community Services says, “The creek could act as a wick, bringing wildfire straight up into rural subdivisions in the county.”

Work is ongoing near Wedgewood, Taylor Estates and Pine Valley.

Future plans include areas near Maple Grove, Evergreen Park and Bear Ridge Estates, as long as funding is approved.

This year’s work is funded through a FireSmart grant received by the county for more than $160,000. The county also spent an addition $30,000 on the efforts.
