Record rainfall closes city fields

The city has closed all grass sports fields due to heavy rain over the past 24 hours. A record 13.8 millimetres of rain fell in Grande Prairie Monday, beating the previous record of 8.0 millimetres in 2004.

Gym & Sport Field Supervisor Lori Goodman-Wilson explains that fields need to fully dry out before being used again. If not, they could be damaged to the point that they’re unplayable for the rest of the season.

The parks department will continue to monitor.
