Claude Lagace acclaimed as Sexsmith mayor

Claude Lagace has been acclaimed as the mayor of Sexsmith. Based off of the unofficial candidate list he was the only person to put their name forward for the position on nomination day, meaning he’ll represent the town for the next four years.

Lagace was first acclaimed to the position in the 2010 municipal election, and admits it’s a bit of a relief not to have to run a campaign. He says he’s proud to continue leading the community.

“The people are just great here. We’ve got lots of things we need to do yet looking to the future.”

The residents who will join him on council are to be determined. Lagace just hopes they come in with fresh thoughts.

“I think everybody that’s applying wants to know what’s best for Sexsmith and they’ve got their own personal ways to bring that forward and that’s great to work with those people with open ideas.”

All but one of six incumbent councillors are running again. Bruce Black, Clinton Froehlick, Isak Skjaveland, Jonathan Siggelkow and Richard Sakundiak have all let their names stand, while Nicole Cook opted out.

Challenging them will be Carolyn Gaunt, Dennis Stredulinsky, Ian Penner, Kate Potter, and Matthew Barnfield. Voting day is October 16, 2017.
