Bantam AA Reds take provincial championship

When Dawson Kokesch and his baseball team headed to Okotoks last weekend for a provincial tournament, he never expected they’d be coming home the Tier three champions.

The Grande Prairie Bantam AA Reds beat Fort Saskatchewan in the final game to earn to the title.

Kokesch, who pitched the championship game, says his team really worked together for the win.

“It was definitely a team effort; everybody made lots of good plays and our coaches made good choices.”

The team is made up of 14 and 15 year olds from the Grande Prairie region.

For many, it was their first championship win.

That was the case for Kokesch, who says his favourite moment came at the very end of the game.

“Pitching the last pitch and winning. The guy hit a line drive to out second baseman and he made a double play.”

The Reds will be wrapping up their season with a celebration shortly.
