UPDATE: Cigarette thrown in garbage can starts Avondale house fire

UPDATE: The Grande Prairie Fire Department says this is the second fire this week to have been caused by an improperly discarded cigarette. An investigation has found the blaze started with a butt thrown out in a garbage can in the home. The damage is estimated to be $200,000.

An Avondale resident came home to a house full of smoke Thursday morning. He arrived just before noon and called 9-1-1 right away.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department was able to bring the blaze under control within 30 minutes, but the fire burned long enough to cause significant damage to the inside of the home.

An investigation into the cause is now underway to figure out what started the flames. No injuries have been reported.
