Wildfire hazard jumps back to very high

As expected, the wildfire hazard for the Grande Prairie Forest Area has been pushed back up to very high. Wildfire information officer Melinda Paplawski says recent warm temperatures and winds in the forecast have increased the risk of a fire sparking.

She adds that this is the time of year when grass starts to cure, which can then burn quickly. Anyone who sees a wildfire should cal 310-FIRE.

The air in the region is again thick from smoke drifting from wildfires burning in B.C. and the northwestern part of the U.S. Firefighters are battling major blazes in Oregon, Montana and Washington, as well as Utah and California.

The Peace Airshed Zone Association says the Air Quality Health Index in Grande Prairie is currently low. Anyone experiencing difficulties breath should call 8-1-1.
