RCMP issue warning to construction zone speeders

As summer construction season winds down, drivers are being reminded to watch out for reduced speed limits around Grande Prairie. There are still construction crews in many areas of the city, and RCMP say they will have a presence around them.

A law came into effect in October 2005 that doubled to fines for speeding in a construction zone when workers are present. It was brought in following a number of people being killed or injured while working on or near a road.

According to the Alberta Motor Association, the fines for speeding in a construction zone in Alberta range from $57 to $351, and come with demerit points. Even if there are no signs ahead warning drivers work is being done, their fine could be doubled if workers are on site.
