New Columbarium for Emerson Trail Cemetery

After requests increased for alternative ways to bury loved ones, the county has added a Columbarium to the Emerson Trail Cemetery. As an option, human remains can now be held in the permanent structure. Cremated remains are put into an urn then stored and sealed in a niche.

County of Grande Prairie Parks and Recreation Manager Christine Rawlins says the granite building was installed thanks to people wanting something different than traditional burials. She adds that the structure is shaped like a grain elevator to keep to the agricultural roots of the county.

In total, there are 36 niches available for purchase with room for two urns in each. The cost is $1,250 each with opening fee of $250 for anyone who wants to open the niche for a second urn. For a cost of $220, the name and date can be put on the door for $220.
