Body of teen swept away by Smoky River found by RCMP

The body of a 15 year old boy swept away by the Smoky River has been found two kilometres downstream of his last sighting. Spirit River RCMP haven’t released his name, but his family identified him to CBC News as Jerald Tschetter.

Jerald went missing on July 28th, and RCMP, fire departments and search and rescue teams have since been scouring the waterway. A dive team was called in to help with boat searches.

Police say the teen was swimming with a group of eight cousins roughly 10 kilometres down from the Watino Bridge when he got caught in an undercurrent. Witnesses say he was seen drifting down the water, but went under and wasn’t seen afterwards. Another cousin was also swept under, but was able to be rescued.

According to the CBC, Jerald was from the nearby Shady Lane Hutterite colony. A funeral is set for Friday.
