GPRC's Animal Health Technology program celebrates 40 years

The Animal Health Technology program at Grande Prairie Regional College has been around since 1974, and some of its students will be sharing memories at a 40th anniversary barbecue this weekend.

Peggy Johnson was in the first class of the program, which teaches everything from surgical assistance to lab and diagnostic work.

“That was a really new thing, and originally, the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association was like, ‘you can’t train people to be veterinarians in two years,’. Well, of course, we’re not veterinarians.”

Approximately 800 people have graduated from the program since it started

The informal event will be held at the Fairview campus at 5 p.m. Saturday by the golf course and fishing pond.

Tours of the recently upgraded surgical facilities are also on the agenda.
