Dunes area to get FireSmart treatment starting next month

County crews are spending the next few weeks working in the Dunes area, getting rid of dead and flammable bush.

County Fire Marshall Ken Atamanchuk says crews will be cover about 65 hectares with this round of FireSmart work.

“They’ll be removing all the dead trees, deadfall, any trees that have been infected by Mountain Pine Beetles will be cut down. So we’re actually taking fuel for any fires out, and getting rid of different means, might be chipping, or often times we’ll try to recycle the wood and use it for other means.”
Atamanchuk says all that wildfire fuel in the Dunes right now poses a danger for nearby properties.

An information session on the thinning process is scheduled for Monday July 21, at the County’s south fire hall from 5-7 pm.
