Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Grande Prairie region

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region. Environment Canada says thunderstorms are expected to develop within an unstable airmass over the foothills today.

Some of those thunderstorms will reportedly have the potential to create hail up to the size of golf balls and wind gusts more than 90 kilometres an hour. That could mean damage to property and tree, and serious injury.

Environment Canada reminds residents that severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes, and that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. If you hear thunder, head indoors.
