Stanley Cup to be in Sexsmith mid-July

Carter Rowney and the Stanley Cup will be part of a celebration in Sexsmith mid-July. After the Pittsburgh Penguins won the cup, the town’s Mayor Claude Legace explains that on July 16th they have Rowney for about two hours. In that time, they have plans for a celebration.

“We are proud and happy to have such a star come to Sexsmith along with the cup. There will be a parade and kids will be able to take pictures with the Stanley Cup and Rowney.”

Legace says it is inspiration for children that grow up in small towns like Sexsmith as they get to see someone who has gone on to make big achievements.

“It isn’t just about hockey, it is about achievements in whatever they decide to do. We are totally isolated and far from other centres. It makes it worth while to celebrate this.”

He says while playoffs were on he was keeping an eye on the local boy.

The town has approved $2,000 for the celebration and it will go at 4:30 p.m. on the Sunday.
