Second disc golf course opens in Grande Prairie

The city of Grande Prairie’s second disc golf course opened in South Bear Creek Park over the weekend. To mark the occasion, a sanctioned tournament was held there for the first time. It was called the Swan City Showdown and over 30 people from out-of-town took part. The event was part of the Alberta Tour which is a series of competitions.

Grande Prairie Disc Golf Club Treasurer and Founder Dylan Bressey explains that the area has some of the province’s best courses.

“Being part of these tours taps us into the community throughout Alberta and Northern Canada, allowing us to draw in more players for our own events. We’re excited to see the sport grow not just here, but also in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John.”

Although there already is a course at Thrill Hill, Bressey says this new one is far more challenging. There is also plans to get a third course for the area in Evergreen Park.

With potential for three courses, Bressey says they could eventually put a bid in to host future major competitions. He says one day they would love to host Canadian Nationals.

The first course for the city was built in 2012. This new course is also set to be part of the inaugural Northern Lights Tour.
