Go21 Walk for Down Syndrome replacing Buddy Walk

Last year’s Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome in Grande Prairie was considered a success, but this year, organizers are changing things up.

The Go21 Movement will take the place of the Buddy Walk, with the number 21 referencing the chromosome that determines if a person has the genetic disorder..

Event organizer Jennifer Lekisch says it is still a celebration of the progress Down syndrome has made in moving away from historical stigmas.

“A lot of people thought children with Down syndrome would never go to school, they would never go to university, they could never have a family. All of those things no longer exist; people with Down syndrome are doing exactly what everybody else is.”

Lekisch says they will hopefully have a website set up for registration in the next week or so.

The walk itself goes September 14th at Muskoseepi Park, and all of the proceeds from the walk will stay in Canada.
