Horse Lake First Nation installing solar panels on arena roof

Construction is underway on the first phase of a major solar energy project in Horse Lake First Nation. Empower Energy Corporation is building a 200 kilowatt solar Photovoltaic system on the Horse Lake Arena.

It’s expected to be the largest installation on a single building in northern Alberta, and will give the First Nation more than 190,000 kilowatt hours of energy a year. It’s funded in part by the provincial government, and members of the community have been hired to help with construction.

The first phase of more than 92 kilowatt hours should be done in the next two weeks, but there’s no timeline yet for the second.
