UPDATE: Severe thunderstorm watch ended for Grande Prairie area

UPDATE: The severe thunderstorm watch for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region has ended.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Grande Prairie – Beaverlodge – Valleyview region, with the County near Wembley and Beaverlodge most affected. Environment Canada says it’s possible that dangerous thunderstorms could develop with damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and last into the evening. Areas farther east and southeast may get watches later on today.

The government warns that strong wind gusts can cause damage to building, cause trees to fall over, and blow large vehicles off the road. Severe thunderstorms can also produce tornadoes. Residents are reminded to head indoors if they hear thunder.
