TransCanada moving ahead with $2B pipeline expansion

TransCanada plans to spend $2 billion to expand its pipeline system in Alberta and British Columbia over the next four years. That will add on to the $5.1 billion already being invested to increase capacity in the Montney and Deep Basin zones.

The Calgary-based company says it has firm contracts to ship around three billion cubic feet of natural gas per day through its NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. system. The Montney area is also included in the demand.

TransCanada says the expansion program will include numerous projects that will add a total of 273 kilometres of pipeline and 150 megawatts of compression at five stations, as well as new meter stations and other facilities.

Applications will start to be filed with the National Energy Board this winter. As long as they get approved, construction is expected to start in early 2019, with the first projects in service by the end of 2019. They should all be up and running by spring 2021.
