City locking up all soccer nets after death of Ontario child

Following the death of a child in Ontario, the City of Grande Prairie will now be locking all soccer nets on its fields when not in use. 10 year old Garrett Mills was killed instantly when the soccer goalpost he was hanging on to tipped over and landed on his head.

Gym and Sports Field Supervisor Lori Goodman-Wilson says the tragedy is a reminder that city staff “should be taking extra precautions to keep the public safe.” She adds that the nets at the Rotary and Gateway fields have been secured for several years, and now the same will be done at the Community Knowledge Campus West Synthetic Turf Field.

The nets will be be available for field rentals if requested.
