Provincial crews battling wildfire near Little Smoky

Alberta Wildfire is currently fighting a blaze in the Little Smoky area. It’s about nine kilometres southeast of the MD of Greenview hamlet and four kilometres east of Highway 43.

It was discovered Thursday and Wildfire Information Officer Melinda Paplawski says it’s being held at 4-point-6 hectares. That means that with the current weather forecast and resources being used, it’s not expected to grow. Crews will be working to bring it under control today.

Three wildfires have broken out in the Grande Prairie Forest Area over the past 24 hours, with the other two either extinguished or turned over to the landowner. A fire advisory is still in effect for both the County of Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie Forest Area, and one has been issued for the MD of Greenview.

Although some parts of the region got a bit of rain last night, it wasn’t enough to drop the wildfire hazard down from high. People in forested areas this weekend are asked to be extremely careful, as warm temperatures, wind and the possibility of lightning could lead to wildfires.

Under the advisory, provincial fire permits are still valid but they could be suspended if the warm, dry weather continues. County residents with permits are being asked not to burn, and no new permits will be issued until further notice. Small campfires in the forest area are still allowed at this time.
