All Grande Prairie outdoor fields closed due to heavy rain

Due to the heavy rain Grande Prairie has gotten over the past 24 hours, all outdoor fields have been closed. The airport weather station recorded 17.4 millimetres before midnight last night, and more fell this morning.

The city says the closure applies to all grass sports fields, easements, and utility lots. All diamonds used for ball games are also off limits, and games set for tonight will need to be rescheduled.

Gym and Sport Field Supervisor Lori Goodman-Wilson explains that they need to fully dry out to make sure they stay in good condition. If they’re damaged, they could be unplayable for the rest of the season.

The parks department will continue to monitor the fields and will update when they can be used again.
