Peace country students on deck at provincial Skills Canada competition

Students from several local high schools are in Edmonton today and tomorrow for the 2017 provincial Skills Canada competition. They are competing in everything from Culinary Arts, Cabinet Making, and Baking to Hairstyling and Workplace Safety.

They earned their spot at provincials after finishing with gold or silver medals at the North West Regional Skills Canada competition in April. The highest ranked competitors from across the province will move on to the national contest in Winnipeg in June.

Representing the Peace region are:

Auto Service: Andy Urich, Grande Prairie Composite High School & Carter McEachern, St. Joseph Catholic High School
Baking: Brayden Lasell, St. Joseph Catholic High School & Jasha Ramons, Glenmary School
Carpentry: Landon Cook, St. Joseph Catholic High School
Cabinet Making: Jared Fehr, Sexsmith Secondary School
Culinary Arts: Moriah Berg, Peace Wapiti Academy & Michaela Huber, Savanna School
Fashion Technology: Loren Gomez, St. Joseph Catholic High School & Andrei De Rueda St. Joseph Catholic High School
Hairstyling Intermediate: Sharlotte Fuchs, Beaverlodge Regional High School & Jordan Lirette, St. Joseph Catholic High School
Hairstyling Junior: Meadow Thomas, Beaverlodge Regional High School & Brianna Wright, Beaverlodge Regional High School
IT Network Systems Administration: Adam Daniel, St. Joseph Catholic High School & Zak Knoepfli, Grande Prairie Composite High School
*Outdoor Power & Recreation Equipment: Jason Cote, Peace Wapiti Academy

*Riley Welander of Peace Wapiti Academy earned silver a regionals, but since Outdoor Power & Recreation Equipment is only held at the North West regionals, only the gold medallist advances

***Only two-member Robotics teams can advance to provincials. Mahlon Knight and Carter Smith also contributed to their team’s gold medal at regionals.
****Pamela Stensrud of Fairview High School earned a gold medal in photography at regionals but was not selected to advance to provincials through the online qualifying competition
