Housing starts up in April, year-to-date down 66 per cent

The lack of multi-unit residential buildings going up in Grande Prairie is driving down the city’s housing starts.

Construction has started on six multiple-family homes so far this year, down from 91 in the first four months of 2016. Work got underway on 15 single family homes last month, beating last April’s seven single and five multi-starts.

Year-to-date construction of single-detached homes is up by about a third of last year’s pace. However, with the drop in multi-starts, this year’s numbers are 66 per cent behind 2016’s.

Edmonton is seeing a similar drop in multi-unit housing, which the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation attributes to having a high number of apartments.
