Downtown construction firing back up again in May

Construction work downtown is expected to start back up early this month. Barricades, signs and fences should be brought in this week, along with equipment, and the construction will likely get underway on May 13th.

The first phase of the downtown rehab project on 101st Street from the CN Rail tracks to 102nd Avenue got underway last summer. Poor weather meant temporary sidewalks had to be put in for the winter, and they’ll be replaced with paving stones this summer.

Phase two will be work on 101st Ave from the Golden Age Centre to 101st Street. The city says the plan is to create a “shared festival” avenue that’s more pedestrian friendly and has room for community events. Underground infrastructure upgrades and curb, gutter and sidewalk installations should be done this year.

All businesses will remain open during construction.
