Housing starts continue to fall in City, County of Grande Prairie

Housing starts in both the City and County of Grande Prairie are drastically behind last year’s pace.

After the first quarter of 2017, construction has started on 24 new homes in the city, down from 104 in the first three months of 2016. That’s a drop of 77 per cent.

Last year saw strong housing starts for the first half of the year, but then numbers dropped for five straight months. March 2016 saw builders get to work on four single family home, and two multiple-family buildings.

In the County of Grande Prairie, housing starts are down even further. Construction began on 16 new homes over the past three months, down 84 per cent from the 100 seen in the first quarter of 2016.
