Alberta sees biggest job boost of any province in March

The unemployment rates for western Alberta and the province overall both went up slightly last month. The rate for the economic region that stretches from Banff to Peace River was 7.88 per cent in March, up point one per cent from February and 0.6 per cent from a year ago. Those numbers aren’t adjusted for seasonal layoffs.

The province saw employment rise by 20,000 last month, the biggest boost of any province. Alberta’s job market has been on an upward trend since the fall. Its unemployment rate increase from 8.3 per cent to 8.4 per cent, but the rate only went up as more people started looking for work.

The same can be said for the country overall. Its rate crept up to 6.7 per cent from 6.6 per cent because more people were looking for a job.
