Local engineer named to APEGA council

A Professional Engineer from Grande Prairie will be representing the north on the council for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geo-scientists of Alberta. Beairsto & Associates Engineer RaeAnne Leach is to be named to the council on April 28th.

“I really think coming from the north is a huge benefit in terms of creating diversity on council. We have a lot of different challenges in our northern remote areas than professionals out of Edmonton and Calgary would.”

The last Grande Prairie member was Heidi Yang who sat on council from 2011 to 2013. Before that, Jim Smith served on council from 2006 to 2012. Smith was the vice president in 2008 and became the president for 2011.

As a member now, Leach will work with other members of council on things like legislation that impacts their field.

“I have a steep learning curve ahead here to get oriented and get my feet wet with council. I volunteered with the branch and spent about three years as the branch chair. It exposed me to the branch meetings and council meetings. That gave me a little bit of familiarity.”

APEGA works to regulate the practices of engineering and geoscience in the province.
