Raises on the way for Grande Prairie Public School support staff

The Grande Prairie Public School District has ratified a four year deal with the Employees’ Association that will see support staff get an incremental raise over the next four years.

Superintendent Carol Ann MacDonald says it’s important to recognize the value of those employees.

“This is the group that supports cleaning our schools and ensuring that our students have that extra support that they need. Without every single one of these employees, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do in schools every day.”

The collective agreement was reached after four days of bargaining, and is retroactive to September 2013.

Employees will received a one lump sum payment for the past school year, followed by a one per cent increase for 2014/2015 and two per cent the next two years.

The school district will also see more permanent Educational Assistants, which were previously called TA’s.

“What is happening is we’ve increased the permanent numbers of EA’s going forward, and as we grow as a district we’ll continue to add permanent EA’s to the mix so that has made our Educational Assistants very happy.”

Of the 180 employees affected, 60 are currently permanent.
