Budget 2017 could include Grande Prairie school funding

Grande Prairie could see funding for schools in tomorrow’s provincial budget. According to sources to the Canadian Press, the budget will have funding for 10 new schools, nine replacements, and seven modernizations.

6,800 new spaces and 6,000 replacement ones are expected for 15 municipalities, and the Swan City is named as one of them. Education Minister David Eggen wouldn’t confirm, but has said the plan is aggressive on school construction.

The Grande Prairie public school district has been pushing for a replacement for the Composite High School, while the Catholic District wants another elementary school and a junior/senior high. Peace Wapiti School Division is also constantly dealing with space issues at Harry Balfour.

There are three ongoing school projects in the City of Grande Prairie and one in the County. Roy Bickell Public School will open up as a K-8 in Royal Oaks this September, Whispering Ridge Community School is slated to open its doors to K-8 students in January 2018, and then St. John Paul II Junior-Senior Catholic High School should be done in time for September 2018. That’s when the modernization of St. Kateri should be done as well.
