Border city gas stations get carbon tax grant program

A new grant program from the Alberta government will be giving gas stations in Lloydminster a break from the carbon tax. The tax has had an added impact on the border city, as it’s split between Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The program is set to start on April 1st, and will cover fuel sales back to January 1, when Alberta’s carbon tax took effect. MLA Jessica Littlewood says the program will be reviewed on an annual basis, depending on carbon prices.

“We need to make sure that when we’re looking at rebates, we’re looking at them case-by-case to see what makes the most sense, what’s impacting businesses, and to make sure they have a level playing field.”

The move will apply to gasoline, diesel, and propane sold on the Alberta side of the city for vehicle use. Grants will cover the equivalent of 2.49 cents per litre of gasoline, 3.35 cents per litre of diesel and 3.48 cents per litre of propane.

The hope is that consumers will see the same price, or close to it on both sides of the border.
