Stronger February doesn’t make up for slow January housing starts

Housing starts in Grande Prairie more than doubled last month, but it wasn’t enough to bring the total for the first two months of this year anywhere close to 2016. Construction started 15 new homes last month, up from six last year.

13 of those were single family homes, when last February saw four. However, January’s numbers were so dismal that year-to-date, the city is 80 per cent behind 2016’s pace.

Across the country, housing starts also rose last month, along with building permits from January. In Grande Prairie, applications for major development over the last two months are basically on par with a year ago.
