Grande Prairie announced as the launch point for Tour of Alberta Team Cycling Challenge

Grande Prairie will be taking part in this summer’s Tour of Alberta, though not in a hosting capacity.
While the race is going on in south central Alberta, 30 teams of 10 will be taking part in the Team Cycling challenge riding from Grande Prairie to Edmonton.
Tour of Alberta Executive Director Duane Vienneau says this particular event is open to anyone who is interested.
“Sometimes at events like this you might get a little bit more of the cycling enthusiasts coming on board, but when you have a team event, it can be anybody. So you don’t have to ride the whole thing.”
Registration for the event is first come first serve, and $4000 per team.
“We believe it’s going to go quickly, and I think the registrations are going to come from a split. I think you’re going to see some people from Grande Prairie, but I also believe there’s going to be people coming from Edmonton and other areas to participate.”
Vienneau says it will be a bit of an extreme cycling event.
“To put it into perspective, the pros last year in our race rode 900 km total over six days. A straight shot to Edmonton from here is about 463 km. So if you look at it, that’s half of the kilometers of the big race last year in one day. That’s about as extreme as you can get, I think.”
The teams will depart from Grande Prairie on the evening of September 5, and should reach Edmonton in about 24 hours.
