Four storey building wanted for vacant lot downtown

After being empty for years, the city is again looking to fill a vacant lot downtown. The plot of land where the former York Hotel and Germaine Park properties were are now available for $625,900 and $297,900, respectively.

Land and economic development manager Brian Glavin says the city is looking at specific requirements for the RFP.

“For the most part, we are looking for a mixed use building minimum four stories. We are happy to entertain any structures that are larger. We want a mixture of four stories with residential component.”

He adds that they are working to revitalize the downtown and this space is in line with their plans.

“Our idea is to have more people living downtown to support businesses and to have more eyes on the streets as a deterrent for crime.”

There has been numerous projects that have fallen through for the site including plans for a hotel and commercial development and an office tower for the Grande Prairie Public School District.

On top of the RFP being sent out for the lots, the city is also trying to provide incentives to tear down old buildings. Facade grants and demolition grants have been and are available for businesses to apply for.
