Thieves target more community mailboxes

RCMP are investigating more community mailbox break-ins in the Grande Prairie region. Corporal Shawn Graham says since there have been thefts from six community mailboxes in the rural area since the beginning of December 2016. Another six in the city and outlying area have been the subject of mischief.

Canada Post says it’s doing everything possible to help police track down the people responsible. Anyone who sees something suspicious should immediate report it to both RCMP and the crown corporation.

This region typically sees an uptick in theft from community mailboxes around the holiday season, getting so bad in 2014 that Canada Post stopped delivery to some areas.

Grande Prairie was slated to be one of the areas being converted from door-to-door mail delivery to community mailboxes in 2015, before the move was called off. About 13,000 Grande Prairie residents already use community mailboxes, with more getting delivery to their apartment lobby.
