Rotarians prepping for Highway to Mexico trip

A group of Rotarians are preparing for their 8 day Highway to Mexico trip. Rotary member Dawn Miller says they had a little trouble getting some paperwork complete to travel through the United States and into Mexico which pushed the date for travel further back. The group will make their annual trip to Mazatlan on April 21st.

“From there we will go out to the districts where [emergency vehicles] are needed. If we have given one to a district that is close by then we will probably go to another district that doesn’t have one. We work with the District Governor through Rotary in Mazatlan to help identify which districts need them.”

This year there will be 4 ambulances and 3 fire trucks being donated to the communities. They have been decalled with rotary stickers and have been checked so they are ready to be driven the more than 5,000 kilometre stretch.

The group has been doing the trip every year since 2002.

“We have taken buses before and we have taken handibuses down. This time it is just the ambulance and fire trucks.”

Community members have reached out with donations for inside the vehicles including the County of Grande Prairie. Two pallets of firefighting equipment has donated to stock the fire trucks.
