Dixonville School classes moving to community hall after fire

Classes for Dixonville School students should start back up again Wednesday, but they won’t be in their normal classrooms.

Staff and student were evacuated around 8:50 a.m. on February 1st after fire and smoke were noticed coming from the gym’s storage room. Several mats had caught fire and created a large amount of smoke.

Dixonville Community Hall will serve as a temporary school until repairs and restoration is done. Officials believe the main part of the school will be able to re-open in a month, but it’s expected three will be needed to get back into the gym.

“We are very thankful for the support of the Dixonville L.I.F.E Agricultural Society who housed the students during the evacuation at the Community Hall,” says Peace River School Division Superintendent Paul Bennett. “They have been very supportive and welcoming to make the Community Hall available for teaching and learning until the school is fit for use.”
