City warned to stay off frozen storm ponds

While the city’s frozen storm ponds may look like a perfect spot for skating or a game of shinny, they are extremely dangerous to play on. Transportation Services Manager Robert Carroll explains that the thickness of the ice in one spot can be wildly different from another due to the storm pipes. Without regular monitoring, that means it’s risky to even walk on the ice, let alone use ATVs and tractors.

If you’re looking for a safe space to skate, the city maintains the pond at Muskoseepi Park, along with several other outdoor hockey rinks. Another 25 are kept up by local volunteers. Any nets, boards, and benches found at storm ponds will be removed by the fire department.
