Grande Prairie Fire Department to get new radio system

The Grande Prairie Fire Department will be getting new equipment for communicating when they head into a fire. They are asking the city for close to $450,000 to cover new Ultra High Frequency radios for each of their members. Logistics Officer Mike Anderson says communication is key in emergency situations. He adds that the new technology is leaps and bounds better than what they are using.

“Clarity of the transmission and the noise cancelling technology is really like game changing technology, to be cliche. We went from a communication technology where you couldn’t be hearing anything to be able to hear it clearly.”

With the old High Frequency radios, noise cancelling technology was not up to par.

“Every time we do a large incident or fire, we do a post incident review. During the review, communication always comes up with either lack of transmission or partial transmissions. You can understand that communication is the most important thing we do.”

Anderson says they could see the switch over happen as early as the spring of 2017.
